Patna, July 14: Just as his unusual name, probationary sub-inspector Worldjeet Kumar doesn’t prefer to abide by laws.
The man, who might become a station house officer (SHO) of a police station in future, was suspended today on charges of beating up his 21-year-old wife, Neetu Kumari, mercilessly for days for dowry.
A resident of Transport Nagar and posted at Agamkuan police station in Patna City, Worldjeet assaulted his wife badly throughout the day yesterday. At sunset, when he left for work, Neetu managed to slip out of the house and reached her father’s residence nearby. She had to be admitted to Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) immediately.
Today, tired of making rounds of the police station to lodge a complaint, Ramlu Ram, Neetu’s father, met the Patna senior superintendent of police (SSP), Alok Kumar.
“The couple got married in 2009. At that time, Worldjeet was working as a peon with Jharkhand tourism department in Ranchi. He had appeared for a probationary sub-inspector examination in 2004 but the results had not been declared for years. I gave him Rs 1.34 lakh for the marriage,” the father said.
Ram works as a clerk at the Rajendra Nagar branch of Canara Bank.
“The results for the probationary sub-inspector examination were declared in the latter half of 2008 and he was selected. At the time of marriage, he was all set to go for training. The problems started once he was back. The newly acquired status of a police official helped his colleagues bag hefty amounts in dowry, something not possible for him to get now. So he started beating up my daughter demanding a plot of land and more cash,” the father alleged.
Yesterday, Worldjeet started beating up Neetu since morning. “He kicked her in the stomach and abdomen. As she fell, he started to punch her head hard and went on throughout the day. In the afternoon, Neetu somehow managed to call me up to say that she was not in a good state. I went to Agamkuan police station and apprised the SHO of it. Worldjeet got to know that I had been to the police station to lodge a complaint. Towards evening, he left for duty but on the way, he met my wife. Worldjeet threatened to finish us and make my 18-year-old son’s life hell,” Ram alleged.
When Neetu reached Ram’s place, he took her to PMCH and admitted her in the emergency ward.
Three months ago, Ram had reported the matter to the women’s cell of the police too.
“The officer there called Worldjeet and made him sign a bond which said if he beat up Neetu again, legal action would be initiated against him. But he has not paid any heed to it,” Ram added.
Repeated phone calls to Worldjeet and the SHO of Agamkuan police station by The Telegraph elicited no response. The Patna SSP said the matter has been taken into consideration.
“The Patna City deputy superintendent of police has been asked to investigate the matter thoroughly and compile a report. Action will be taken and the probationary sub-inspector will be brought in for a departmental inquiry,” the senior officer said.
In a late evening development, the Patna SSP suspended Worldjeet from duty and ordered the lodging of an FIR against him at Agamkuan police station.
