Patna: Paras HMRI hospital's orthopaedic surgeon Nishikant Pandey on Saturday said knee and hip replacement surgeries should only be done by experienced hands to avoid complications.
One of the main reasons such surgeries fail, he said, is because they are not performed by competent experts - doctors who perform it on a regular basis unlike those who do it once a month or a year.
Dr Pandey was speaking at a conference organised by the Global Orthopaedic Forum.
"Selection of patients is also important for the success of such surgeries. A doctor should check the muscle power of the patient and if it is highly compromised, a surgery should not be performed. Selecting the right kind of implant is also important," he said, also talking about the role of a dual mobility cup, a new kind of implant used in total hip replacement cases.
Harish Bhende (Mumbai), B.D. Chatterjee and Varun Chandra (Calcutta), and Ashish Singh (Patna) were among the other speakers.
