Patna, June 26: Chief minister Nitish Kumar today said the distribution system in the country was “improper” and needs to be revamped for the uplift of the farmers.

Nitish said this at a gathering of farmers organised at SK Memorial Hall to mark the death anniversary of Swami Sahajanand Saraswati, a farmer leader form Uttar Pradesh who mobilised peasants against the zamindari system.

Nitish said: “There are many people who are sleeping empty stomach despite the government having enough food stock. Improper distribution of foodgrains is also affecting the condition of farmers. Unless the condition of farmers improves, it’s not possible to develop the state.”

He further said: “The distribution system has to be made effective along with revamping farmers’ condition and that should be the first priority to the ministers and officials concerned. Increasing production is not the only concern for me, I want it delivered to the poor people and for that the distribution system has to be effective.” Commenting on his first agriculture cabinet, Kumar said: “Through the agriculture cabinet, we have to take things like water, irrigation, minor irrigation, electricity to the villages to increase production. Again I say that that unless we deliver the produce to the farmers, our effort will not be complete.”

Talking about starting a second green revolution from Bihar, Nitish said: “It’s not possible to increase production in areas where it has reached the pinnacle, like Punjab and Harayana. Now, the second green revolution will begin from Bihar but it would be different and more holistic. It would be a rainbow revolution where agriculture through organic farming will be promoted. We have fertile soil and our farmer are hard working. If the farmers get the technical training along with proper technique, then revolution can be brought in all spheres of agriculture.”

On the improved road condition, the chief minister said: “The roads have become better which has helped farmers in many ways. Now farming of onions is being carried out in the interiors areas which earlier did not happen. Farmers are growing onions and selling them in urban market on their price.”
