This Valentine’s Day, your outing plans could be at a risk if the clouds on Wednesday morning are anything to go by.

According to the Met department, there would be slight dip in the day temperature and rise in the night temperature on Thursday.

The department has forecast a strong western disturbance prevailing over Jammu & Kashmir that would hit Bihar by Friday. This would lead to light rainfall during the weekend.

Ashish Sen, the director of India Meteorological Department, Patna, told The Telegraph on Wednesday: “A strong western disturbance that originated over Pakistan has on Wednesday reached Jammu & Kashmir. It is headed towards northwest India.”

He added: “It is because of this western disturbance that there was cloud formation in the middle-level of the atmosphere over Patna on Wednesday, leading to hazy skies in the morning. Cloudy skies are likely to be observed on Thursday morning too, which would turn hazy by the afternoon. However, there is no possibility of rainfall at least for tomorrow (Thursday).”

As the cloud cover prevents the radiation from the earth’s surface to rise in the upper layer of the atmosphere, the minimum temperature in Patna stood at 13°C, which was two notches above normal. It was also two degrees more than that recorded on Wednesday.

The same cloud cover prevents the solar radiation from reaching the earth’s surface. Thus, a dip in day temperature would be observed on Thursday.

“We are expecting the maximum temperature to hover around 25°C on Thursday, which was around 26°C on Wednesday. However, the cloud cover obstructs the radiation from the earth’s surface to rise to the upper layers of atmosphere, which would lead to slight rise in the night temperature. Accordingly, we are expecting the minimum temperature to be around 13-14°C,” said Sen.

The overcast weather conditions have, however, caused many youngsters to change their outing plans for the Valentine’s Day.

“I had taken a day off from my office for a Rajgir trip with my wife on the Valentine’s Day. However, looking at the weather conditions on Wednesday, I fear that rain might play a spoilsport on Thursday,” said Shailendra Dixit, a state government employee in Patna.

Residents are advised to carry umbrellas if they have plans to go out during the weekend. “The western disturbance is likely to enter Bihar on Saturday. There would be incursion of moisture from the Arabian Sea and very high moist air incursion from the Bay of Bengal as well. These factors are likely to lead to light rainfall in Bihar, including the capital on Saturday and Sunday. Our headquarters has also issued a warning for isolated thunder squall and hailstorm on February 17,” Sen added.

Regarding the expected departure of winter, Sen said: “Winter is said to depart when the minimum temperature remains above 13 degrees for over a week. Such a condition is expected to arrive in the state capital by February 20. Till then, the minimum temperature would be around 11-12°C and maximum would be around 25-26°C.”
