Patna, May 17: New-look Patna roads may get new names too. A number of Patna Municipal Corporation councillors are demanding that various city roads be named after local and national heroes.

Owing to the growing demands of the councillors, mayor Afzal Imam has decided to form a committee to suggest new names for several streets.

Imam told The Telegraph the matter will be brought up for discussion in the standing committee meeting after which a special committee would be formed to recommend new names for several streets, including main roads and interior roads. He said the names of some of the roundabouts may also be changed.

“Many councillors have been saying that several streets have funny names which make no sense. Like there are Kachauri Gali, Pakaudi Gali, Pua Gali, Bandaria Road and Mirchai Road in Patna City. People living in these areas also want these names to be changed,” Imam said. Sources in the corporation said while many roads in the city still reminded of British empire, many others sounded more like pet names than real names.

“The road between Chiraiyatad Bridge and Postal Park roundabout is called English Road. What is the point of persisting with the name long after the British have left the country? We are suggesting the English Road be now named as Shaheed Kishore Kunal Road after a Kargil war martyr from Postal Park Colony,” said a councillor representing the area.

Another councillor from Patna City said Kachauri Gali in the city area be named as Shah Azimabadi Road after a famous Urdu poet from the locality. There are also suggestions that the main roundabout in Anisabad be named Maulana Azad Chowk.

Meanwhile, senior officials in the civic agency said according to the procedure, PMC is authorised to change names of roads, parks or colonies falling within the corporation limits. “According to rules, a committee of councillors chosen for the task will recommend names for the roads which will then be presented in the corporation board meeting and if the board approves them, they will be presented before the empowered standing committee. If that committee approves them too, the corporation would notify the changes and the information will be sent to the state urban development department,” the official said.
