East Champaran police have brought back notorious criminal Bablu Dubey (33), alias Mithilesh Dubey, whom the Nepal police arrested from Kathmandu last week.

Before bringing Dubey to Motihari on Wednesday, six of his accomplices were arrested. They also found evidence linking Dubey — the mastermind behind extortions, loot, murders and road hold-ups — to 67 people, among them a Member of Parliament and around 20 people holding white-collar jobs. The police did not specify who the MP was but said around 25 suspects had been nabbed.

Belonging to Siswa Kharar village under Kalyanpur police station, Dubey was wanted in over 43 cases of serious criminal nature and carried a reward of Rs 50,000 on his head. He was passing himself off as Surendra Mishra in the house of one Vijay Pandey in Kathmandu. He is said to have killed his father over a land dispute.

East Champaran superintendent of police Vinay Kumar on Thursday said the police have recovered all five cellphones and six SIM cards, five of them from Nepal, that Dubey used. They also have in their possession a text message and voice clippings, which, they claim, are strong evidence against Dubey and his men. “Chargesheets against all the arrested accused would be submitted by Friday,” the SP said.

East Champaran police got custody of Bablu from a bordering village in Adapur area. Bablu had his first brush with crime in 2001. He soon got associated with Bihar People’s Liberation Army in 2012.

Apart from operating from Nepal, Dubey also ran a lodge at Narainghat in the name of his younger brother Dablu Dubey.
