New Delhi/Gwalior, Aug. 28 (PTI): The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has established that the son of a Bihar minister, who allegedly attempted suicide in a Gwalior school was ragged, and would showcause the institute.

A fact-finding committee of the CBSE regional directorate, which visited the school on August 24, has concluded that “the student was ragged”, said officials in the human resource development (HRD) ministry.

They, however, said the committee has not been able to establish whether he attempted suicide.

The 14-year-old son of Bihar cooperative minister Jai Kumar Singh, is admitted in a hospital here. A showcause notice will also be issued to the school under the CBSE affiliation bylaws as ragging is prohibited in the board’s schools, said the officials before adding that the CBSE report has been presented to the HRD ministry.

Gwalior police have already booked three students and two employees of The Scindia School in connection with the incident, while the school has expelled them. The trio allegedly forced the boy to sweep the floor and also used to sometimes punish him asking him to bend down in various positions. They also allegedly beat him up, police have said.

Police have also seized a bedsheet and a ceiling fan from the veranda in front of the victim’s hostel room. He allegedly tried to hang himself from the fan using the sheet but his feet touched the floor and the fan got unstuck from ceiling, which saved his life.

Nearly 50 parents formed a human chain at Phoolbagh today, demanding action against the school principal for allegedly not handling the case properly.

“So far, no action has been taken by the district administration against the principal and the vice-principal despite the Supreme Court’s clear directives that the head of the school is equally responsible for the incidents of ragging,” said Sudhir Sapra, the president of the All India Parents Association’s Gwalior chapter.

He also demanded the Gwalior collector make public the letter he had written to the police after the probe report was submitted recommending action against the accused. Sapra also demanded the CBSE to act against the school in this regard.

On August 20, the victim allegedly tried to commit suicide after being ragged by Class XII students.

The trio were later expelled by the school, while the two employees, who were supposed to maintain discipline on the campus, were debarred after a three-member internal committee constituted soon after the incident submitted its report in the matter, school principal Samik Ghosh had earlier said.

The offenders and the school staffers were subsequently arrested but later released on bail, a police officer said.
