Patna: Bihar is expected to receive good rainfall in the coming week.
Weathermen had forecast increased weather activity during this period in the state because of favourable conditions. Patna Met office scientist Anand Shankar said the monsoon trough line was passing over the state, which was expected to bring good rainfall in general and south Bihar districts in particular.
Even the afternoon forecast of India Meteorological Department on Friday said one or two places in Bihar was expected to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall.
In meteorological parlance rainfall is said to be heavy if the precipitation level remains above 64.5mm whereas it becomes very heavy if the precipitation in a day's time is above 114.5mm.
Shankar said the monsoon trough line was passing through Patna on Thursday because of which good rainfall was expected in the state.
Monsoon trough line is an imaginary line that extends from west to east.
Generally, areas falling south of the trough line receive good rainfall. With the progress of monsoon this line advances towards north. Even in case of Bihar it is expected to move northwards bringing more rainfall across the state.
"Earlier a low pressure area had developed over Odisha because of which the trough line had shifted southwards and this is why Bihar was not getting enough rainfall after August 15. Now this phenomenon has dissipated allowing northward movement of the trough line," said Shankar.
He said rainfall deficiency percentage was expected to comedown drastically because of the expected rainfall in the state.
Till August 22, Bihar had received 564.4mm of rainfall against the normal of 720.1mm, which was 22 per cent below normal.
Reports coming from agriculture department said good rainfall in July and in the first few days of August had led to increased farming activities.
"Against the target of sowing paddy in 34,00,000 hectares, farmers have so far sowed the crop in 31.48 lakh hectares, which was 92.6 per cent of the target," agriculture minister Prem Kumar said.
