Male sterilisation number drops
Patna (PTI): Despite attractive incentives, lesser numbers of men are going for family planning measures in the state. According to figures available with the Bihar State Health Society, the percentage of male sterilisation has dropped in recent years.
In 2010-2011, the percentage of male sterilisation was 2.05. It slipped to 1.3 per cent in 2011-12 and 1 per cent in 2012-13. Only 6,180 men came forward for sterilisation in 2012-13 as compared to 7,146 in 2011-12. A total of 10,367 men availed family planning measures in 2010-11.
To popularise family planning, the state government has been paying lucrative incentive. While only Rs 600 is paid to a woman opting for family planning, the sum is almost double at Rs 1,100 for a man. Likewise, a sum of Rs 100 is paid to a “motivator” to convince a woman to opt for sterilisation, in case of a man it is Rs 200.
Bihar State Health Society secretary Sanjay Kumar said the government has intensified campaign for increasing the numbers.
