HC order against varsity squatters

Patna: The high court on Tuesday directed the government to remove all encroachments from Patna University within two weeks and file a report. 

The order was passed by the division bench of Chief Justice L. Narasimha Reddy and Justice Anjana Mishra.
Petitioner Vikas Chandra, alias Guddu Baba, alleged that rampant encroachment on almost all colleges affiliated to the university, apart from the hostels, has damaged the academic environment. 

The court on Tuesday also directed the police station concerned to provide security to the petitioner, as Guddu told the bench that he was getting threats. 

Bribery sentence

Patna: Special CBI judge Arunendra Singh on Tuesday sentenced a former manager of Bank of India (Sangrampur branch) in Araria, Raju Kumar, to six years’ rigorous imprisonment in connection with a bribery case. Raju was caught red-handed on March 21, 2014. 

Life term

Patna: Additional district and sessions judge of Patna City civil court Surendra Kumar Pandey on Tuesday sentenced Mohammad Jony, a resident of Chhoti Nagla under Malsalami police station, to life imprisonment for the murder of a eight-year-old boy, Chhotu, on April 25, 2008. 

Anant bail plea

Patna: JDU MLA Anant Singh on Tuesday filed a regular bail petition in an extortion case lodged against him. The court would hear the petition on Wednesday. The MLA also filed two separate petitions in a murder and kidnapping case. Beur police have lodged FIRs against Anant in a 2009 murder case and a kidnapping case of 2013. Singh sought judicial custody in both the cases. These petitions would also be heard on July 29.

Patna: Bihar Hindi Sahitya Sammelan spokesperson Ajay Kumar congratulated noted Hindi literary critic Namvar Singh on his birthday on Tuesday. 

Prayer

Patna: Believers Church Diocese organised a special prayer session to pay homage to former President APJ Abdul Kalam on Tuesday. Bishop, clergies, parishioners joined the prayer service. Bishop M.A. Lalachan said Kalam was a global leader who had captured the heart and mind of millions of people across the globe.

Vigilance case

Chhapra: The vigilance department has sought permission from the office of the governor-cum-chancellor of state universities to file a chargesheet and initiate prosecution against Jai Prakash University vice-chancellor Dwijendra Gupta in connection with the scam in purchase of answer sheets. Vigilance superintendent of police Dilip Kumar Mishra has written a letter to this effect to the principal secretary of the governor. He said sufficient evidence has been collected for filing the chargesheet. 

Students’ protest

Chhapra: Students blocked the road near Jagdam College for two hours on Tuesday and burnt tyres to protest against the inaction of the principal. They alleged that the principal remained absent for most days and does not pay attention to the students’ problems.
