A 22-year-old woman bobbitised her father-in-law after he allegedly attempted to rape her at Rampur Muradpur village under the jurisdiction of Maniari police station in Muzaffarpur district, around 80km north of Patna, on Thursday.
The incident comes close on the heels of a similar incident in East Champaran district where a young woman bobbitised her father-in-law with a sharp-edged weapon on Sunday night.
In that incident the father-in-law had tried to rape the woman late at night when she was sleeping with her children.
Bobbitising, an act of severing the penis, comes from US resident Lorena Bobbitt, who made headlines in 1993 by cutting off the genitals of her philandering husband John Wayne Bobbitt.
At Rampur Muradpur, the woman told the police that her father-in-law, Surendra Sahni (46), had barged into her room around 4am and tried to rape her.
Though she raised an alarm, nobody came to her rescue.
Finding no way out, she attacked Sahni’s genitals with a blade, causing severe injuries.
Sahni’s neighbours admitted him to the Maniari referral hospital.
On getting information, a police team led by acting station house officer (SHO) Laxman Kumar visited the hospital and took Sahni into custody.
“He is being treated under police custody. He will be forwarded to judicial custody after his condition improves,” the acting SHO said, adding that the police earlier recorded the woman’s statement and lodged a complaint against Sahni, a farmer.
The woman said in her statement that she was alone as her husband works in a private firm in Delhi. She said Sahni had tried to molest her on earlier occasions but she didn’t report the matter to the police fearing social stigma.
“My repeated requests failed to deter him so I decided to teach him a lesson and chopped off his genitals with the blade,” she told the investigating officer.
The SHO said the police would also find out whether the incident was fallout of a property dispute.
Sahni’s four sons had recently filed a complaint in the local court following a dispute over ancestral property at the village, around 10km south of the district headquarters town.
