All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS)-Patna students continued their protest on Friday, while the administration geared up to send letters and emails to parents of 450 students from all five batches, asking them to control their wards.
"The AIIMS administration has asked parents to advise their wards to end the protest," said a source at AIIMS-Patna. "The parents have been told that the student protest would not only harm the institution's reputation, but also affect their studies as their session would get delayed. The administration has appealed to parents to ensure their wards lift the protest while also hinting at some sort of action against the students."
Before sending the mails to the parents, the AIIMS-Patna administration tried to resolve the matter by talking to the students. Three senior faculty members asked them to lift the protest, even offering to arrange a meeting with Union health ministry officials, but the students didn't budge.
"We are not going to leave this protest mid-way until we get a communication from the Union health ministry," said a protesting MBBS student on condition of anonymity. "Our issues cannot be addressed by the director. Only the ministry can address problems like delayed construction work of hospital blocks and manpower shortage. Today, we sent emails to the Prime Minister's Office and various Union health ministry officials. We are hoping to get a response soon."
The students are on the warpath since Tuesday over lack of infrastructure and manpower at the college and its attached hostel. On Monday, students had boycotted the college's foundation day function. They began boycotting classes on Wednesday. No student has attended classes since.
The students' outburst extended to their Twitter handle, AIIMS Patna Students, on Friday. The page had tweets like "Pakistani gandagi saaf karna thik hai sahab, par apne desh k bhavishya, ye bhavi chikitsak v nirash hain (It is good to clean the Pakistan's dirt but aspiring doctors of the country are also unhappy)", "Balu sariya ka dher hai, building banne mein der hai (There is plenty of construction materials all around, but completion of the construction work is not in sight)" and "#SaluteToIndianArmy Need such swift and decision action @AiimsP_Protest too!".
The students also uploaded a video of their protest. Earlier in the day, AIIMS Patna director G.K. Singh uploaded a YouTube message asking students to end the protest but it had no effect on the medics.
