A group of doctors at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS)-Patna has set up a club called Susamvedna to help needy patients.
The club, set up two weeks ago, has 11 members. They have created a corpus fund by donating Rs 5,500 each.
A brainchild of AIIMS director G.K. Singh, the club would provide all help to needy patients — from providing walkers to wheelchairs, from food to medicines, the list is long. Several organisations have approached to join hands with the club in its mission.
“Senior officials of a private bank recently visited us and showed interest in funding treatment of cancer patients. We are in the process of opening a separate bank account for the club after which such help would be accepted. Few more organisations have showed willingness to fund treatment of needy patients,” said club member Umesh Kumar Bhadani, who heads the anaesthesia department of AIIMS-Patna.
Bhadani said the club would provide assistance after verifying their credentials.
Dr Prem Kumar, the head of the health hub’s radiology department said: “Doctors become emotionally attached to patients. On many occasions, they find patients and their relatives in problem and feel like helping them but limitations come in the way.”
Mahesh Kumar (45), a Phulwarisharif patient suffering from a chronic kidney disease was pleasantly surprised during one of his recent visits to the AIIMS outpatient department. “I had difficulty in walking. I was surprised when I was provided a walker by some doctors. They said they had formed a club to help patients. It’s a noble initiative taken by AIIMS-Patna doctors. They have set a good example,” he said.
