Opposition parties alleged that attacks against them have intensified in the last 24-hours as Bengal prepares for another round of elections at stake are more than 2,200 wards in 108 municipalities across the state, of which the Trinamul has already won four uncontested.

On Friday night at North 24-Parganas Kamarhati, from where the local MLA is Trinamul’s Madan Mitra, bombs were hurled outside the residence of the CPM nominee from ward 25, Adri Roy. Attacks were also allegedly carried out in North 24-Parganas Barrackpore.

A CPM candidate from Bhatpara municipality’s ward 13, Mohammad Jamil was allegedly offered Rs 5 lakh to leave the poll fray or pay with his life. Jamil has turned down the offer.

In Burdwan’s Kalna municipality, another CPM nominee, Piyali Bhattacharya, sustained head injuries after being attacked allegedly by Trinamul goons/

“I have withdrawn my name after I was threatened and requested the local Trinamul leaders to allow me to stay in my house. Where will I go with my wife and children?” asked a BJP leader from Hooghly’s Arambagh

A delegation of the Left’s women’s organisation went to the state election commission office on Saturday to demand closed-circuit television cameras be operational during the poll hours.

In the civic bodies, including Calcutta Municipal Corporation where polls were held earlier, CCTV cameras were either not working or were focussed elsewhere.

The CPM has also demanded that Soumya Ray, the superintendent of police, Howrah (Rural) district, be removed from maintaining law and order during the polls because of his alleged involvement in the Anis Khan murder case. Ray is also the husband of a Trinamul legislator from South 24-Parganas.
