Malda, July 17: Even though ?lot of anti-erosion work? has recently been done chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee did not rule out the possibility of a devastation in Malda and Murshidabad districts this year too.
Talking to reporters here at the circuit house the chief minister expressed serious concern over the situation.
?It has become too difficult to prevent erosion from Malda to Murshidabad. The monsoon has just set in, rain water from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh will flow through Bengal,? Bhattacharjee said.
The chief minister said he had discussed the matter with the Prime Minister and stressed on the need for preparing a master plan for the districts here.
?Even though it requires huge funds, the Prime Minister has agreed with me on principle,? the chief minister said. He said he held a series of meetings with Union water re sources minister Priya Ranjan Das Munshi on the issue.
The chief minister, who reviewed the situation with the district authorities for an hour yesterday, said adequate arrangements had been made to meet all emergencies.
According to him the anti-erosion work done by the irrigation department at Panchanandapur area this year had helped to check erosion.
Bhattacharya said he would discuss the problem of unauthorised occupation on the Ganga char land with his Jharkhand counterpart.
Erosion, though far less than the past two years began this year on July 13, exactly on the same date as last year. The chief minister listened to apprehensions voiced by the residents of Panchanandapur about this year being ?very critical?. Irrigation department officials pointed out that the people themselves had resisted the creation of a ninth embankment to halt the progress of the Ganga towards Panchanandapur and Malda town.
