Rajarhat: Police on Thursday asked the owner of a Vedic Village villa whether he used to rent out his property on weekends.
Four men were arrested on Sunday after Pranav Singh, the owner, allegedly found them partying in his villa without his knowledge.
"We asked Singh whether he had made any contact with any listings site to rent out his property. He said he had not registered his property with any such website and asserted he had no clue how his villa had been rented out," an officer of the Bidhannagar commissionerate said.
The four who had been arrested, including the 23-year old owner of a call centre, had told the investigating officers that they had booked the villa for the weekend through a listings site.
They had produced a "booking" receipt to the guards at the gate. "On reaching Singh's villa, they found no one around and so they broke open the lock," the officer said.
Singh had detained the group partying in his villa before alerting Rajarhat police station. The men in the group were arrested, while the women were let off with a warning.
Villas at the Vedic Village complex are rented out on the weekends. The rent varies between Rs 10,000 and Rs 20,000 a night.
The website through which the accused had rented the villa has since been taken down. Officers of the cyber crime police station of the Bidhannagar commissionerate are yet to track the Internet Protocol address of the computer that was used to create the website.
