The first convocation of West Bengal State University, Barasat, has been postponed on the instructions of governor M.K. Narayanan, the chancellor of the university.

The governor wanted the convocation postponed since the institution’s court has not yet been constituted according to the new university act.

The convocation was scheduled on February 25. About 28,000 undergraduate and postgraduate students were to get certificates on the occasion.

The chancellor’s office has said in a letter that since a convocation is essentially an extraordinary meeting of the court, the non-existence of the court creates a technical hurdle to holding a convocation, said vice-chancellor Ashok Thakur. The formation of the court would start soon, he added.
