Alipurduar: Birpara police have arrested two persons, both of whom are from Tripura, for carrying syrup bottles containing codeine phosphate that is also used as a narcotic.
The duo, police said, were carrying the bottles in a truck and could not furnish appropriate documents to validate the consignment.
"A team of Birpara police chased the truck and stopped it. They searched the vehicle and found 1,900 bottles of cough syrup containing codeine phosphate. Those in the truck could not show any document. The truck and the bottles have been seized and two persons arrested," said Ganesh Biswas, additional superintendent of police, Jaigaon.
The arrested are Sadhan Debnath of West Tripura and Sunny Sen of Unakati, also in Tripura. Charges under Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act have been brought against them.
Police sources said the police team initially could not find the bottles.
"The bottles were kept in a secret chamber that is on the roof of the driver's cabin," said a source.
