Gangtok, July 9: The night-club scene here is set to move out of its weekend confines.
Three young men with a passion for music have got together to give Gangtok music fans a good time through the week. Pema Ladakhi, DJ Tenzing and DJ Prashant have decided to introduce the concept of “special nights” at Xcape — the latest club- cum-disco in town.
“The idea is to give people with different tastes a chance to come and groove to their favourite sounds,” said Ladakhi, who is the proprietor of Xcape.
So while retro will be the flavour on certain days, Indipop and Bhangra will rule on “black” Mondays. Independence Rock nights have been lined up in August to give headbangers a chance to rock to their favourite bands.
“Retro nights will be a regular feature at the club. The music will span hits from the sixties, seventies and eighties which the older crowd here enjoys. Since most shops in the town remain shut on Mondays, traders who miss out on the weekend scene can come and enjoy their favourite tracks on that day,” said DJ Prashant.
Xcape, which boasts of the best sound and lights system in Gangtok, has also decided to do something exclusively for the ladies in a first of its kind event in the state.
“Thursdays will be ladies’ night. The ambience will be different so that members of the fairer sex can come and have a great time,” said DJ Tenzing.
Ladhaki, Tenzing and Prashant said they were “driven by their love for music” to give people in the town a chance to shake a leg to the music they love. Ladakhi is a businessman and owner of a cinema hall, Prashant is a filmaker and Tenzing owns a foreign goods shop.
Tenzing and Prashant, the resident DJs at Xcape, usually spin a motley mix of hip-hop, trance, Indipop and remixes. The intoxicating blend of music, high-end lights and sound and a carefully crafted ambience has helped establish Xcape as one of the favourite “happening” hangouts in the state.
“Now every age group can enjoy what Xcape has to offer. Great music, a really cool environment and loads of fun, that’s the mantra,” said Ladakhi.
