Driver drugged, vehicle stolen
lFour miscreants sped away with a Tata Sumo after offering the driver a bottle of soft drinks laced with drugs on Tuesday. According to the police, the four youth hired the vehicle from Ashokenagar, in North 24-Parganas. When the vehicle reached Colootola Street in north Calcutta, they offered Tapan Dey, the driver, the drink. Dey fell unconscious. When he came around, he found himself lying on the roadside in Salt Lake. He lodged a complaint with the Bowbazar police station. No one had been arrested till late on Tuesday. More than a hundred families were evicted from a two-bigha plot of Calcutta Municipal Corporation (CMC) land on Chakraberia Road on Tuesday. According to mayor Subrata Mukherjee, a two-storeyed community hall will be constructed on the plot. This will be let out “at a reasonable rate” for social functions. The community hall will be ready by Poila Baisakh, Mukherjee added. Justice D.P. Kundu of Calcutta High Court on Tuesday vacated his earlier interim order and upheld the decision of the Calcutta Municipal Corporation to lock the main gate of Society cinema. After receiving the order, CMC officials slammed the doors shut at the hall which had opened briefly on Sunday. Three out of 10 mayor-in-council members boycotted the council meeting convened by mayor Subrata Mukherjee on Tuesday as the notice for the meeing was given to them only on Monday evening. According to the rules, the notice is required to be served at least 48 hours before a meeting. They have expressed their resentment to Trinamul Congress chairperson Mamata Banerjee against the “deliberate humiliation” they had been subjected to by the mayor. Nasima Bibi, 60, was killed when a Maruti knocked her down in Barrackpore on Tuesday. Local residents rushed her to nearby B.N. Basu Hospital where the doctors pronounced her dead. The driver escaped with the vehicle. The police and the CESC in several joint raids arrested six people and removed 230 illegal hookings in different parts of North 24-Parganas on Tuesday. The number of hookings removed in the Patipukur railway bazar and the Dum Dum Cantonment areas were 30 and 200, respectively.
