Two candidates of the Combined Medical Service Examination — an all-India exam conducted by the UPSC — and their fathers were injured after a part of a sunshade from the third floor of a building collapsed on them in Calcutta on Sunday afternoon.

The incident happened while they were waiting at the crossing of AJC Bose Road and Lord Sinha Road during the gap between the first and second halves of the examination.

Baishali Bhowmick, 25, from Santoshpur in Calcutta, her father Santanu Bhowmick, 62, and Moumita Sanyal, 25, and her father Ashoke Sanyal, 50, from Darjipara in Jalpaiguri, were waiting on the pavement of the five storey commercial building. Police said that a chunk of concrete fell off the third floor of the building where repair work was on, following which the sunshade just above the heads of the people fell on them.

“All four received injuries on their head and shoulders. They have been admitted to the SSKM hospital,” said an officer of Shakespeare Sarani police station.

Police said that their condition was stable.

The all-India exam was scheduled at Shakhawat Memorial Government Girl’s High School.

Police said both the girls had appeared for the first half of the examination but could not appear for the second second half.

An officer of Shakespeare Sarani police station said they have not received any specific complaint from the families of the examinees but a probe has been initiated on whether there was any negligence on part of the contractor carrying out repairs on the third floor of the five-storey building.

An eyewitness said there was a loud sound and he saw the sunshade just above the pavement where the examinees and their fathers were standing, crashing on them.

“The people on the pavement directly came under the impact of the sunshade. Police rescued them,” he said.
