The Medica Group of Hospitals on Friday announced an investment of Rs 50 crore for the expansion of infrastructure at its cancer care unit on the outskirts of Siliguri.

Nandakumar Jairam, the chairman of the private healthcare group based in Calcutta, said a new building with modern infrastructure would be built on the premises of the existing Medica Cancer Hospital at Rangapani, around 15km from here. The hospital at Rangapani has been operational for the past 10 years.

“Construction (of the new building) will start this month and by the end of the current year, it will be functional with a lot of new facilities. We are providing comprehensive cancer care to patients and the recovery rate is good. We have treated more than 80,000 patients so far under the supervision of highly skilled and experienced cancer specialists,” he said.

The group also runs a private nursing home at Pradhannagar in the city.

Manish Goswami, an oncologist of the hospital, said the new building would be four-storied.

“There will be OPDs (outpatient departments) on the ground floor and a chemotherapy unit on the first floor. The second floor will have ICUs and the third will have two modular operation theatres,” he said.

Speaking of facilities at the existing hospital, the authorities said they had introduced a number of the latest technologies in the field of medical, surgical and radiation oncology.

Those include a high-end radiation facility, positron emission tomography-computed tomography scan (PETCT), therapeutic nuclear medicine and a bone bank.

“We also have an advanced lab with the latest pathological test facilities for effective cancer treatment,” said a source.
