Behrampore, July 16: The hostel superintendent accused of sexually assaulting a Class V boy at a Don Bosco School in Murshidabad was arrested today from the institute.
District superintendent of police Humayun Kabir said both the accused and the boy would be sent for medical tests. “The boy will also be asked to give a statement before a magistrate,” he added.
Kabir said he himself interrogated the hostel superintendent today. “But he has denied the charges.”
The Don Bosco school in Murshidabad is affiliated to the Diocese of Krishnagar and not the Don Bosco Society which runs the Don Bosco Schools in Calcutta’s Park Circus and Howrah’s Liluah.
Bishop Joseph Gomes of Krishnagar Diocese said, “I have spoken to the fathers in Monigram and sought a detailed report. I will not say anything beyond that.”
The boy’s father, an affluent farmer, had said in his complaint that his son called him up on Friday morning to say the hostel superintendent had sexually assaulted him the previous night after calling him to his room.
The police had yesterday said a team could be sent to Jharkhand’s Dumka in search of the hostel superintendent because he hailed from there.
The police today refused to clarify if the superintendent had been hiding in the school building. Sources in the Monigram institute, however, denied that the accused was arrested on the school premises.
The hostel superintendent was produced in a Jangipur court, which remanded him in 14 days’ judicial custody.
The police have started a case under the Juvenile Justice Act and Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code, which prohibits sex “against the order of nature”.
According to Kabir, another student of the school had complained to his parents in February that the hostel superintendent had sexually assault him. “We have come to know that the student’s parents took him out of the school,” the district police chief said.
“There was no written complaint either to the school or the police. We will send a team to the boy’s home in (Murshidabad’s) Lohapur to speak to him and his father. If they agree to lodge a complaint, we will add them as witnesses to the case (of the Class V boy),” Kabir said.
The father of the Class V boy said he was “happy” with the arrest of the hostel superintendent. “I want stringent punishment for him.”
