Jalpaiguri, July 22: Debasree Sanyal, the student at the centre of the ragging storm in Jalpaiguri Government Engineering College, rejoined her classes today.

Debasree’s father Tarun Sanyal had lodged a complaint with the police on July 18 stating that senior students at the girls’ hostel had ragged his daughter. He later withdrew the complaint.

Sanyal claimed he had withdrawn the complaint “for the sake of my daughter and other students in the college”.

Debasree had also retracted from her earlier position and stated that “nobody had tortured me”.

The college authorities, however, are not prepared to throw in the towel despite the move made by Debasree’s family to effect a compromise.

The principal is awaiting the report of a fact-finding committee investigating the incident.

“I will decide on the course of action after the report is submitted. So far the allegation has not been proved. However, we are keeping an open mind,” said J.Jhampati, the principal of the college.

“We have received the report of the three-member investigating team. But to ensure that none of the facts remains hidden, we have formed a fact finding committee. In fact the team has reported to the committee, which has started investigating,” added Jhmapati

The principal said the panel would reconstruct the event to find out what exactly happened.as they were. The committee, comprising professors of the college, would be submitting a report to the principal on July 26 or 27.

The college will then decide whether any action is to be taken against the Sanyals if the allegation proves to be false.

The college authorities are worried that such allegations aof ragging are tarnishing the image of the institution.
