Indrani Dutta, wife of Bidhannagar Muncipality vice-chairman and Rajarhat MLA Sabyasachi Dutta, and herself a former ward councillor, has become the general secretary of DL Block Residents’ Association.

The new committee was chosen on June 23. “One hundred and five residents voted. Of the 20 candidates who contested the election, the top 19 were inducted into our executive committee,” said the new joint secretary Subir Chatterjee.

The new committee then met to select office-bearers. “The committee felt that Dutta, being an influential person, would be effective as general secretary. Also, the block has never had a lady in this position and we wanted to break the glass ceiling,” said Chatterjee.

Dutta was councillor of the erstwhile Ward 10 comprising BF, CF, CE, DE and DF blocks from 2005 to 2010.

Asked to comment on the buzz in the block that she might be eyeing nomination in the 2015 municipal elections from the ward, Dutta, a resident of DL Block for 13 years, said: “I do not need to hold the secretary’s post to gain popularity.”

The new committee has started a cultural programme on Rathyatra, held on July 10 at the community hall.
