What: The Newtown School
Where: Action Area 1, New Town
Session begins: April 2015. Admission open for classes Nursery to VII.
Classes: Nursery to Class VII at present. The school will follow the CBSE curriculum. Each class would have eight sections with 30 students each.
Mission: Academics will be the priority though students will have ample opportunity to take part in co-curricular activities for all-round development.
The seeds of the school were sown in the middle of 2012 after the director participated in an e-auction initiated by HIDCO.
Mission-makers: The school is owned by Savitri Education Foundation with Sunil Agarwal and Sanjay Khemka as trustee members.
Malini Bhagat will be the director, academics, and Satabdi Bhattacharya, the principal.
'A school gives me an ultimate satisfaction to nurture a child. I wish to make a school where children will have a strong academic foundation and I will be successful in guiding my students and help them choose the right career path,' said Agarwal, founder-director.
'All major competitive exams in medical and engineering are conducted by CBSE. At the same time, it does not create too much pressure,' said Agarwal, also centre director, Bengal, Aakash Institute.
Campus: Spread across two acres, there will be two blocks connected by a pathway.
A basketball court separates the two blocks flanked by a swimming pool and a green patch on either side.
The outer wall of the brick-and-mortar buildings have 13 characters - both alphabet and numerals - embossed.
Green building: The school will have a sewerage treatment plant where water will be recycled. It will also have an LED lighting system and green-compliant rooftop flooring.
'The paint that we are using also follows green building norms,' Agarwal said.
Facilities: The school will boast activity rooms for dance, music, sculpture and yoga. It would also have maths and robotics lab.
The auditorium will accommodate around 300 persons and there will be separate libraries for junior and senior sections. All classrooms will have interactive boards.
Security: There will be 190 CCTV cameras across the campus, including the classrooms, corridors and office areas.
All buses would be Global Positioning System (GPS)-enabled. 'It's a very well-defined system where parents would receive a text message once the bus starts from school and another when it approaches the drop point,' said Agarwal.
