A 35-year-old man died in Malda after allegedly killing two of his relatives on Saturday night.

Sources said Tubai Mandal, 35, a daily wage earner, had gone to the parental home of his wife Nirmala, 32, at Badha Pukur under Englishbazar police station on Saturday night and asked his wife to return home.

Nirmala, who had been staying with her parents for three months, refused. Angered, Tubai allegedly attacked her relatives with an axe. Nirmala’s niece Lakshmi Mandal, 15, and sister-in-law Dipti Mandal, 25, died in the attack. Nirmala sustained grievous injuries.

Tubai died as he fell off the roof of the two-storey home while trying to flee. The couple did not have children.

Police detained one of Nirmala’s relatives for inquiries.

On Sunday morning, residents of Badha Pukur staged a blockade along the Malda-Mothabari route that connects NH12, protesting against the law and order and the detention of Nirmala’s relative. The police spoke to protesters who lifted the roadblock after an hour.
