Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday cited the violence in Bhatpara to warn the people of the state about the “perils” of voting the BJP to power.

Ekta Bhatpara diye dekhe nin BJP ke vote dile ki hoy (Bhatpara is the evidence of what will happen if the BJP is voted),” Mamata said during a discussion on the governor’s address in the Assembly.

Bhatpara has been on the boil since May 23 when Trinamul turncoat Arjun Singh won as the BJP candidate from the Barrackpore Lok Sabha seat while his son Pawan came out trumps in the by-poll for the Bhatpara Assembly seat.

Trinamul secretary-general and parliamentary affairs minister Partha Chatterjee on Wednesday announced that a Trinamul legislature team comprising ministers Subrata Mukherjee, Firhad Hakim, Jyotipriya Mullick, Purnendu Bose, Sujit Bose, Bratya Basu, chief government whip Nirmal Ghosh and MLA Partha Bhowmick would visit the Bhatpara area on Friday.

“After visiting the trouble-torn areas in Bhatpara, the legislature team will submit a report to me. That will be handed over to the chief minister,” Chatterjee said.

In her speech, Mamata stressed that the state government was determined to ensurd normality in Bhatpara and accused the BJP of trying to keep the unrest alive for “narrow political gains”.

Later, the chief minister told reporters that the government had given compensation to 309 people whose houses and shops were damaged during the clashes in Bhatpara, 35km from Calcutta.

Hitting out at the Narendra Modi government for sending law and order advisories to Bengal, the chief minister said: “Those sending advisories to us should remember what’s happening in Uttar Pradesh, where encounters and lynching have become regular affairs.”

According to sources in Nabanna, three advisories from the Union home ministry have so far reached the state — one on the post-poll violence Bhatpara and Sandeshkhali, and another on now-withdrawn the junior doctors’ agitation.

The BJP denounced Mamata’s comments. “Whatever she said on the floor of the House is an insult to the voters’ mandate. She is scared and her desperation is showing,” BJP legislature party leader Manoj Tigga said.
