Salt Lake: A man had his leg crushed when he fell trying to get off a moving bus in the Sector V area on Saturday.

Deepak Bharwada, 55, slipped on the footboard opposite the driver's seat of the air-conditioned state bus AC12, headed to New Town from Howrah.

The accident occurred at College More around 3.30pm, police said.

The bus had turned left towards New Town from the crossing.

By the time the driver braked, the front left wheel had run over Bharwada's right leg.

Some passengers and passers-by pulled Bharwada from under the bus and took him to Bidhannagar Sub-divisional Hospital.

He was referred to NRS Medical College and Hospital but his family members who had reached by then shifted him to a private hospital, an officer of Sector V police station said.

"He had suffered multiple fractures on his right leg," a doctor at the hospital said.

Bharwada, a resident of Mahim Halder Street in Kalighat, had boarded the bus from Howrah.

He was seated when the bus had stopped at the designated bus stop about 20m from the accident spot, the officer quoted some passengers as saying.

"He suddenly realised he had to get off," the officer said.

Air-conditioned buses that ply on Calcutta roads have two hydraulic doors, in the front and in the middle.

The middle door remains shut most of the time and passengers have to use the front door.

The bus was taken to Sector V police station and the driver detained.
