Alipore: A city court on Thursday turned down a plea by Haseen Jahan that her cricketer husband Mohammad Shami be asked to pay her a monthly maintenance of Rs 7 lakh.

The court, however, ordered the cricketer to pay Rs 80,000 a month for the couple's three-year-old daughter.

Haseen had lodged a complaint of torture against Shami and also moved court seeking maintenance.

She had sought an interim relief of Rs 7 lakh a month for herself and Rs 3 lakh for their daughter.

The court of judicial magistrate Neha Sharma only accepted the prayer for the child and fixed an amount of Rs 80,000 as monthly maintenance.

"The court has allowed an interim relief of Rs 80,000 for Haseen Jahan's daughter but turned down her maintenance claim of Rs 7 lakh on the ground that there is no evidence in support of our statement about Shami's income. We will appeal against the order," lawyer Zakir Hossain, who was representing Haseen, submitted.

Hossain had submitted that Shami, being a member of the Indian cricket team, earned around Rs 10 crore a year and was in a position to pay Rs 10 lakh a month for his wife and child.

Haseen had alleged that Shami had an affair with a Pakistani woman and that the cricketer and his family had subjected her to mental and physical torture.

Shami's lawyer Sk. Salim Rahman submitted before the magistrate on Thursday that Haseen had kept from him that she had been married and had two daughters from the earlier marriage.

"The marriage certificate mentions her as unmarried, which is proof enough that she had hidden her marital status from my client. We also have proof that she is self-sufficient as she is acting in films and is also involved in modelling," Rahman said.

A photocopy of the marriage certificate and a few newspaper clippings were submitted in the court.
