Salt Lake: Four gold bangles were snatched from an 85-year-old woman by men who offered to polish copper utensils at her Salt Lake home on Thursday afternoon.

Kasturi Majumder was resting in a ground-floor bedroom at her two-storey home in AD block when she heard the doorbell ring.

She stepped out on the balcony and saw two men standing at the door.

"They first told me they were floor cleaners and asked me to open the door to let them in. When I said I did not need their service, they said they also polished copperware," she told Metro.

Realising that Kasturi was still unsure, the men suggested that she hand over the utensils through the gaps in the grille instead of opening the gate.

Kasturi went into the house and brought back a copper puja utensil. As soon as she stretched her hands to give the utensil to the men, they pulled out the two pairs of gold bangles that she was wearing.

"I had been wearing the bangles over the past few decades. I could not believe that they were stealing them.I could not even scream," she said.

Kasturi's son Pradip Kumar Majumdar, a retired college teacher, and daughter-in-law Subhra were on the first floor but Kasturi went up to them only after the duo had escaped.

"Our house is being renovated and the men must have noticed that as they had introduced themselves as floor cleaners. We are among the first to have moved into this block and had never imagined that something like this could take place in broad daylight," Subhra said.

The Majumders lodged a police complaint with Bidhannagar North police station late on Thursday.

"We have started an investigation and are trying to get footage from CCTV cameras in the locality," said an officer of the Bidhannagar commissionerate.

No one was arrested till late on Friday.
