Calcutta, July 30: Singer Pratima Bandopadhyay passed away last night at the age of 71.

Since her first record, Malakhani Niye Amarey Bholate Chao, in 1946, Bandopadhyay enthralled Bengalis across generations. From Banshbaganer Mathar Opor and Amar Hath Dhorey Tumi to Ekta Gaan Likho Amar Jonyo, she has over a thousand songs to her credit.

She was long suffering from arthritis and died following cardiac failure, her family members said. Bandopadhyay is survived by a son and a daughter.

The chief minister recalled her contribution to music.

Bandopadhyay was cremated this morning.
