Kalimpong, Oct. 20: The dandiya wave has hit Kalimpong this Dashain.
A dandiya programme is being organised in the town for the first time tomorrow.
Organised by a group of youths to celebrate Navratri, the event is being held to promote harmony in the town.
Dandiya, which is one of the highlights of Navaratri celebrations in Gujarat, has become popular all over the country in recent years.
Bijay Bansal, one of the organisers of the programme, said: ?The dandiya dance is a part of a Gujarati festival called Dandia Garva. We have wanted to hold this programme for a long time, but this is the first time we are being able to do so. We want people from all communities to come and participate in the event.?
The programme will be held at Girls High School Centenary Hall from six in the evening.
Revellers are expected to turn up in ethnic finery to swirl to the throbbing mix churned out by a live orchestra and a Calcutta-based DJ.
?We are bringing in an orchestra from Calcutta. The tunes played by the orchestra will be a blend of folk songs and Hindi film music. We have also brought a DJ to spice up the mix,? said Bansal.
The organisers said they would make the dandiya night an annual affair if the response is good this year.
?If people participate in large numbers, we will try and organise the dandiya event every year,? said Bansal.
A food stall will dish out a variety of delicacies and fast food items.
Prizes will be given to the best-dressed couple and the person who turns up in the finest costume.
