Calcutta, June 12: A special medical team, set up by Calcutta High Court to look into the cause of death of a CPM activist injured in the clash between police and party cadres on May 22, has said the leader died of brain haemorrhage and there was no mark of injury on his body.

CPM activist Salil Basu was injured in the clash with the police during the party's march to Nabanna on May 22 and had died at his home on June 4.

Basu's family members had moved court alleging that he died from injuries he suffered because of the baton-charge by the police and demanded an inquiry.

Following the plea, Justice Joymalya Bagchi had directed the superintendent of SSKM Hospital to set up a medical board and conduct a post-mortem of Basu's body.

Additional advocate-general Abhratosh Majumdar today submitted the report in the court on behalf of the medical team.

After going through the report, Justice Bagchi said: "According to the medical team, Salil Basu died because of brain haemorrhage and no mark of injury was found on his body."

Senior advocate Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharyya, the counsel appearing for Basu's family, requested the judge to hand over a copy of the report to the family and the judge granted his prayer.

Moving the petition on behalf of Basu's family on June 6, Bhattacharyya had claimed in the court that the CPM activist was "severely manhandled" by the police during the march to Nabanna.

"Since then, my client was feeling unwell. On June 3, he fell down in the bathroom of his home at Baguiati and was admitted to a hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries the next day," the lawyer said.

After Basu's death, his family members had lodged a case holding the police responsible.
