Cancer camp for women

Gangtok, March 23: The state health and family welfare department, in association with the biochemistry unit of the Calcutta-based Indian Statistical Institute, organised a cancer detection camp at Sir Thutob Namgyal Memorial Hospital today.

The camp was targeted at women to detect cancer of the uterine cervix which forms part of the female reproductive tract. Some 120 women attended the camp among which 73 were screened during the day.


Army aid

Chungthang: The 30 Assam Rifles regiment, based in the district, handed over educational aids and sports equipment to various local clubs and associations in Chungthang and Pegong under its civil-military aid programme. The move is part of the regiment’s initiative to better relationship with civilians living in areas under the vigil of the Indian Army in north Sikkim.


Rebel remand

Alipurduar: The KLO militants who surrendered yesterday in Malda were produced in the court of the Alipurduar subdivisional judicial magistrate on Tuesday afternoon. Both Harimohon Mandal alias Haria and Manoj Dey alias Parimal Mandal belong to Bamongola area of Malda. They were trained in the fourth batch of the KLO. The duo was involved in the encounter at Lepchakha in the Bhutan hills. They have been remanded in police custody for five days.


Garden gherao

Jaigaon: Around 300 employees of Dalsinghpara Tea Garden in Kalchini block have gheraoed the manager from 7 am to 1 pm every day since Saturday. They have been protesting against non-payment of their salary for the last three and half months.


Dacoits held

Cooch Behar: Police arrested two dacoits at Balakuthi village in Baxirhat police station area on Monday night and seized two pipe-guns and a bhojali from their possession. According to police, a gang of six had assembled at Balakuthi to commit a robbery.


Gold bill paid

Cooch Behar: The police are yet to identify the youth who used a child as a pawn to escape with ornaments worth Rs 3,000. Inspector-in-charge of Cooch Behar police station said the father of five-year-old Rasidul Mian paid the bill and took his son home on Tuesday.
