Calcutta, Nov. 30: Chief minister Mamata Banerjee made an unscheduled visit to Pranab Mukherjee at Raj Bhavan late tonight, minutes after it was announced that the President had cancelled his programmes in Calcutta tomorrow to fly back to Delhi because of the death of former Prime Minister I.K. Gujral.
Mamata arrived at Raj Bhavan without her convoy at 10.45pm and left at 11.30pm.
Calcutta: Farmer Shiladitya Chowdhury, who was arrested for questioning Mamata Banerjee at a West Midnapore rally about rising fertiliser prices, today shared the dais with BJP leaders at a Calcutta meeting.
“I want to join the BJP,” Shiladitya, whose family had claimed he was a Trinamul supporter, said after the rally on Rani Rashmoni Road.
Calcutta: A division bench of Calcutta High Court on Friday directed the Centre to file reports in two weeks stating its view on setting up a 2,000MW power plant at Nayachar in East Midnapore. The order followed a petition by fishermen challenging the legality of the project proposed by Universal Success, a company headed by NRI businessman Prasun Mukherjee. The project has to be approved by the Centre and the central pollution-control board.
Calcutta: Calcutta High Court on Friday asked the West Midnapore district magistrate to file a report on the inmates of Midnapore central jail and their living condition. The order followed a PIL alleging that an inmate died of dengue recently.
