Based on the popular supernatural novel by Souvik Chakraborty, the Hoichoi series Nikosh Chhaya 2 is a direct sequel to its preceding season. It continues the story of occult expert Bhaduri Moshai, delving into deeper mysteries as he returns to confront a new supernatural threat.
Starring Chiranjeet Chakraborty once again as Bhaduri Moshai, the trailer of Nikosh Chhaya 2 reveals that it picks up where season 1 left off and focuses on the veteran occult scientist’s ongoing battle against dark forces. With a dark, folklore-infused occult horror theme, it narrates the story of one of Bhaduri Moshai’s former disciples, a sinister Aghori tantric named Loknath (Kanchan Mullick) who has acquired formidable dark powers that enable him to make the dead do his bidding. When Loknath abducts Mitul (Surangana Bandyopadhyay), a favourite young student of Bhaduri Moshai, with a terrifying intent, Bhaduri Moshai goes to rescue her from his clutches, leading to a compelling face-off between the two.
Season 2 appears to dive deep into Bengali mysticism, witchcraft, hypnotism, black magic and other ancient dark arts and rituals, creating a chilling mood and an unsettling ambience. The trailer builds a tense and uneasy atmosphere as Bhaduri Moshai is pitted in a race against time to save Mitul. As in season 1, Chiranjeet Chakraborty delivers a powerful but understated performance, bringing depth and maturity to his character as an occult investigator. His dignified portrayal anchors the narrative, adding credibility to the supernatural story.
A central figure in the story in this season, Surangana seems to pull off her character of Mitul with great conviction, showcasing in the trailer an admirable balance between fear and strength of character. Her experience in multiple horror series in recent times is effectively highlighted in the mature way she portrays both her vulnerability and her faith. Gaurav Chakrabarty, who reprises his role as Amiyo, a police officer, demonstrates in the trailer a more emotionally-charged and aggressive performance, reflecting his desperation and devastation following the kidnapping of his partner Mitul. Kanchan Mullick effortlessly transitions into a negative role from his usual comic onscreen persona, embodying his character of the villainous tantric with a menacing, dark and serious demeanour.
The cinematography captures an eerie, haunting, and foreboding atmosphere through the use of darkness, shadows and silhouettes. Its sound design is unique; its pauses and deafening silences creating as much of a strong impact as the uneven, dissonant musical notes of the background score and distorted human sounds like screams, shrieks and screeches.
A visually ambitious, folklore-rich horror series, Nikosh Chhaya 2, directed by Sayantan Ghosal, promises an intense, gripping battle of wits and supernatural forces. The series is streaming on Hoichoi now.
