At its Google I/O developer conference, Google unveiled a new agentic personal assistant called Gemini Spark. The always-on AI agent can tackle tasks such as writing emails, creating study guides and monitoring credit card statements for hidden subscription fees.
Powered by Gemini 3.5 Flash, Gemini Spark runs in the background using virtual machines on Google Cloud and can connect to Google Workspace apps including Docs, Gmail, Sheets and Slides, as well as third-party apps such as Canva and Instacart.
The 24/7 AI assistant is designed to navigate a user’s digital life, taking action on their behalf and under their direction. Since it runs on dedicated virtual machines on Google Cloud, users do not need to keep their laptops open to ensure it continues running.
This is Google’s take on OpenClaw, the AI agent platform that stirred discussion in the tech industry earlier this year.
Later this summer, Google plans to give Spark the ability to interact with local files through the Gemini app on macOS. “We’ll be bringing Gemini Spark to the Gemini desktop app this summer so it can help with tasks involving your local files and automate workflows across your desktop,” the company said in a statement.
Google also said it is working on new voice experiences in the macOS app, similar to what it previewed at The Android Show. According to the company, users will not have to worry about pauses or incomplete thoughts while speaking aloud. Using on-screen context, Gemini will be able to turn free-flowing speech into formatted drafts and rework text in real time based on user intent.
The macOS app is available to download today for all users, while Gemini Spark and the new voice features are expected to roll out later this summer.
Users will also be able to email Spark through a dedicated Gmail address, and the AI agent can interact directly with the web through Chrome. On mobile devices, users can track the agent’s progress through the new Android Halo system. Gemini Spark will roll out to trusted testers this week, while Google plans to launch a beta version for US Google AI Ultra subscribers next week.
