Habra: A youth boasting of his proximity to a Trinamul Congress MLA allegedly molested and assaulted a woman in Ashokenagar, North 24-Parganas, on Monday evening after she rejected his repeated advances.
The woman lodged a police complaint alleging that Papan Sarkar, 24, had barged into her house with a 30-strong gang.
Before leaving, she wrote in her complaint, Papan said he was close to Ashokenagar's Trinamul MLA, Dhiman Roy, and the police would dare not touch him.
Roy admitted that he knew Papan. "He used to visit my office and he attended several programmes with me in recent past. But six months ago, following complaints that he was threatening people dropping my name, I asked him not to set foot in my office again," Roy told Metro.
"Law will take its course and I condemned the incident if it really happened."
A case has been registered but Papan could not be arrested till late on Tuesday. "We have received a complaint from the woman and started an investigation," an officer of Ashokenagar police station said.
The woman, whose husband is a garments trader, mentioned in her complaint that Papan, who sources said was a leader of the ruling party's youth unit, had repeatedly given her indecent proposals despite her protests.
"A few days ago, Papan waylaid me while I was returning home in the evening. He caught hold my hand. I objected and managed to free myself," she told the police. "I repeatedly warned him against harassing me. I did not go to the police initially because Papan was a neighbour and I thought he would mend his ways."
The police said a fight broke out between Papan and the woman's family on Sunday.
She mentioned in her complaint that Papan and around 30 other youths barged into her house in the evening and threw out bundles of garments.
"When I tried to resist them, Papan assaulted me and tried to tear my clothes. Before leaving, he dropped MLA Roy's name and said police would not take any action against him," she wrote.
Residents of the area held a demonstration when the police arrived at the spot.
