Jadavpur University vice-chancellor Suranjan Das was discharged from hospital on Thursday but officials said he was yet to recover from Tuesday’s assault and not in a position to resume office.
A doctor who treated Das at AMRI Hospitals Dhakuria said the VC had been advised rest for seven days. He will be examined again on March 3.
The university has granted him 12 days’ leave.
“He is diabetic and suffers from chronic hypertension. His stress level increased during the incident at the university on Tuesday. So, his blood sugar level and blood pressure shotup. He has been advised rest for at least seven days,” the doctor said.
Das also suffers from back pain, which the doctor said aggravated on Tuesday.
Some students had allegedly assaulted Das when he intervened in a scuffle between two groups in front of Aurobindo Bhavan, the administrative headquarters of the university.
Das has repeatedly refused to identify the attackers. “I know the names of the students who assaulted me but will not lodge any complaint against them,” Das said while leaving the hospital.
Education minister Partha Chatterjee had said after calling on Das in his hospital cabin on Wednesday that those who had assaulted the VC must not be spared.
“Those who demeaned you will have to be identified. This has been happening repeatedly on the campus. This cannot be tolerated. You need to take administrative action. You should not think as an educationist,” Chatterjee is said to have told Das.
The VC told Metro on Thursday: “I don’t believe in lodging a complaint against my students. As far as my students are concerned, I don’t consider myself a vice-chancellor. I am a teacher,” he said.
Students were demonstrating in front of Aurobindo Bhavan on Tuesday, demanding that the university hold union polls at the earliest. JU has said it cannot hold the polls unless being asked by the government to do so.
