Major national tournaments are being hosted by the state to boost the enthusiasm of both sportspersons and those who love sports in Odisha. The players performed brilliantly in recent state-level and national-level events in various disciplines.
The state is playing host to the 38th National Women’s Sports Competition, which began on November 2 at Gurgaon, Haryana, and was inaugurated on Tuesday in Bhubaneswar. The event is being hosted jointly by Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Chennai and Odisha. In the Odisha leg of the competition, tournaments in the disciplines of basketball, gymnastics and swimming will be hosted at Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar and Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium in Cuttack till November 30. As many as 700 sportspersons and 150 officials are taking part in the meet.
Ancient English game croquet, which is slowly gaining popularity across the world, will be first played officially in an upcoming event in Bhubaneswar. The first-ever National Croquet Coaching Camp and Championship will be hosted here in January.
Odisha Croquet and Gateball Association, under the auspices of Croquet Federation of India, is hosting the event at the Kalinga Stadium in the city from January 5 to 8. The coaching camp will be held on January 5 and 6 while the championship will be held on the following two days. Over 150 players from 20 states will take part in the event.
Odisha won its first Ranji Trophy match in four years last week, beating host state Haryana by four wickets on the final day of their league match in Rohtak. Haryana scored 66 and 300 in its two innings, to which the state team replied strongly, scoring 219 and 152 to claim six points.
After winning the match, the team has bounced back well despite a few upsets in the series. Playing against Karnataka in Bangalore, Odisha boys put up a good show scoring 202 and 255 while the hosts had scored 213 in their first innings and were 43/1 at the end of the third day’s play on Monday. Odisha will be playing Maharashtra at home in their next Ranji match to be hosted at the VSS Stadium in Sambalpur from December 1 to 4. The Ranji match between Gujarat and Railways played at the Railway Stadium in Bhubaneswar is well poised. While Gujarat could manage only 117 in their first innings, Railways put up a solid 308. Gujarat had made a come back by scoring 288/6 in their second innings at the end of the third day.
The 5th CII Golf Cup was organised by Confederation of Indian Industry at the golf course of Bhubaneswar Golf Club near Infocity area on Saturday. The tournament was an 18-hole stroke play. Dalbir Singh of Royale Group bagged the champion’s trophy. Earlier last week, team Acrux, represented by couple Ramesh Swain and Lakhi Swain, won the team title in the three-day 8th Corporate Golf Tournament at the same venue. Srikant Pradhan of Mahanadi Coalfields Limited claimed the individual’s title and the award for the longest drive, while Ajay Negi of Bhubaneswar Golf Club won the best gross title along with the prize for the nearest-to-pin category. Sunil Taneja of Toyota, Bhubaneswar, won the 17 to 24-handicap category. Lakhi Swain also won the best lady golfer’s prize in the tournament.
The 19th State Billiards and Snooker Championship concluded at the Cuttack Club on Sunday. Young cueist Nishant Biswal grabbed the title by beating former state champion Subrat Das 6-5 with a score line of 50-11, 64-23, 56-30, 23-56, 22-64, 82 (74 break)-00,35-60, 61-30, 46-74, 36-60, 67(53 break)-00.
Organised by the Billiards and Snooker Association of Odisha, the event featured 84 cueists from all over the state. Ashutosh Padhy won both the junior billiard and snooker titles while Subrat Das emerged as the champion in senior billiards.
