Silchar: Seven youths of Assam's Silchar town have bagged the honours in the National Savate Championship that was held under the aegis of the Savate Federation of India in Chandigarh on November 8-9.

Savate, also known as French boxing, French kickboxing or French foot-fighting, is a form of French martial arts that uses hands and feet as weapons of defence, combining elements of western boxing and kickboxing techniques.

More than 200 candidates from different states took part in the championship.

Among the eight participants from Silchar, seven from the Extreme Martial Arts (a martial arts centre), won medals.

Biplab Roy, Anupam Roy and Arpita Nag bagged gold medals, Jayanta Paul, S.B. Nag and Fanjowbam Indrajit Singh bagged a silver medal each and Joyjeet Dhar bagged a bronze medal.

Rameshwar Das, the chief instructor/coach of Extreme Martial Arts, told The Telegraph on Monday afternoon that it was a fantastic achievement by the students and that he was optimistic of many more such prize-winning feats in future.

"All the students had worked really hard for the championship. It feels great to see that their efforts have produced remarkable results," he added.

The jury comprised Alain Tardits, a member of the International Savate Federation, Jhurry Ajay, international coach, referee and judge, Stephane Tardits, international savate boxer and Louise Almera, international savate boxer.
