Titanic, Vidyasagar bridge and the Buddha temple of Thailand are the main attractions of two big-budget Durga Pujas of Udharbond in Barak Valley.

The Kali Bari Road Sarbajanin Durga Puja Committee, in its 33rd year, is showcasing the Titanic and Calcutta’s Vidyasagar bridge. Secretary of the committee Sankar Roy said devotees would enter the pandal through the bridge with an entry pass.

He said the idol, set inside the Titanic floating over the sea, would be visible with 3D glasses.

Roy said there will be 49 aquariums in the pandal and 2,500 fish species have been released in them.

The entire decoration was created by a team of 52 artisans from Nabadwip and Midnapore during the last two months, led by Pradip Bhuiya, Ananda Rajbangshi and Uttam Jana.

Roy said they have provided clothes to inmates of Anath Ashram (a destitute home) and the cancer hospital in Silchar. They also distributed umbrellas to Koroikandi and Lathirgram madrassas, water flasks and tiffin boxes to some of the schools in Udharbond.

The Hospital Road Sarbajanin Durga Puja Committee, another big-budget pandal, has constructed the Buddha temple of Thailand. Joint secretary of the committee, Ranjit Banik, said they are creating awareness on improving the environment. He said they want people to save trees and this theme forms the main decoration in the pandal. Banik said they would felicitate senior citizens of the locality.

The Cachar district administration has made elaborate security arrangements for maintaining law and order during the festival. All the puja committees have been asked to install closed-circuit television cameras (CCTVs) and deploy volunteers round-the-clock to avert any untoward incident.

The Hailakandi district administration has chalked out a traffic control plan for the festival days. The Karimganj administration has asked volunteers to maintain cleanliness around the pandals as part of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. The Puja committees have been asked to use loudspeakers from 6am to 10pm.
