Manipur emerge on top - Haryana and Chhattisgarh take second and third positions

Imphal, June 30: Manipur clinched the team champions title, bagging 36 medals in the 33rd National Taekwondo Championship 2013 that concluded at Khuman Lampak indoor stadium today.

Hosts Manipur finished with 23 gold, nine silver and four bronze medals for the top position while Haryana took the runners-up title with 11 gold, 14 silver and 10 bronze medals.

Chhattisgarh came third with 11 gold, seven silver and 11 bronze medals while Madhya Pradesh collected six gold, 10 silver and 17 bronze.

Uttar Pradesh bagged five gold, seven silver and 12 bronze; Uttarakhand got four gold, six silver and 12 bronze; West Bengal won three gold and four bronze medals; Tamil Nadu have two gold, two silver and six bronze medals; Gujarat won two gold, one silver and four bronze medals; Karnataka won one gold, two silver and two bronze.

Delhi finished the championship in the eleventh position with one gold, one silver and five bronze; Punjab have five silver and six bronze; Odisha have two silver and 10 bronze; Himachal Pradesh bagged two bronze and Karnataka returned home empty handed.

The Best Male Fighter title was grabbed by S. Gandhi Singh of Manipur while Vandana Singh of Uttarakhand was adjudged the Beat Female Fighter of the tournament.

In the last day action of the competition, Manipur picked six gold medals with Md Salman in the junior male feather 51-55kg category, Rk. Dhanajit won the senior male black belt heavy over-87kg, L. Bhopen Singh bagged the sub-junior male welter 49-53kg, M. Romiyo Singh in senior male black belt middle 80-87kg, Md Aziz Khan in senior male black belt feather 63-74kg and L. Meghachandra won the senior male black belt bantam 58-63kg category.

Madhya Pradesh came up with four gold from Govinda in the senior men’s black belt fly 54-58kg, Ayush Jain in the male black belt welter 74-80kg, Nitia Sharma in the sub-junior female light heavy 55-59kg and Dharmendra Ojha in the senior black belt fin 54kg.
