Guwahati: Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti leader Akhil Gogoi on Friday asked Asom Sattra Mahasabha to make public in a week the memorandum it had submitted to the joint parliamentary committee on the citizenship amendment bill in Delhi on April 17.

The Mahasabha had submitted a memorandum reportedly backing the Centre's proposed amendment of citizenship act in joint parliamentary committee hearing.

The proposed amendment to the act has faced widespread condemnation in Assam from organisations like the KMSS and All Assam Students' Union because of the threat it poses to the identity of the Assamese community. The BJP-led Centre formed the joint parliamentary committee on August 11, 2016, to take the views of various sections of society on the bill.

"By submitting the memorandum in support of the proposed amendment, Asom Sattra Mahasabha showed is anti-Assamese stand. This incident proved the alleged friendship of RSS and Mahasabha. Xatradhikars are the most respected persons in Assamese society. Now most of them have lost respect. We demand an apology," Akhil said.

He said if the Mahasabha does not follow the deadline, the KMSS would stage protests. If the decision was only the statement of Mahasabha's general secretary Kusum Kumar Mahanta and xatradhikar Janardan Dev Goswami, the organisation should suspend them, he said.

Hindu Yuva Chattra Parishad, Assam on Friday also extended support to the reported stand of the Mahasabha in supporting the bill.

The Mahasabha's Jorhat committee has condemned Mahanta and Goswami's appearing before the JPC. Former general-secretary, now steering committee member of ASM, Bhaba Goswami, said the meeting took serious view of the "unauthorised meeting, without taking consent and approval of the Mahasabha".
