Jorhat, April 9: A huge gathering of people at the Millenium Park here today resolved to demand the inclusion of the Prime Minister’s Office in the proposed Jan Lok Pal Bill (citizen’s ombudsman bill) along with other politicians and bureaucrats.

People gathered at the park today in support of the demands made by Anna Hazare after a rallying call was made in his support and against corruption, by a number of organisations and prominent individuals here. The other resolutions were not to promote corruption at any cost and to support Hazare in his fight.

Anna Hazare ended his three-day fast at New Delhi after his demands for inclusion of representatives from civil society in the joint committee that will draft the bill, was acceded to by the Centre.

Former judge of the Supreme Court S.N. Phukan said here that in the fight against corruption along with enacting a strong anti-corruption Act, people themselves should be aware of the immorality of being corrupt. “That indulging in corruption is shameful should be ingrained in everyone from a young age so that it is shunned by one and all. Corruption has spread like a cancer in our society and unless it is rooted out, we will have to live a dissolute existence,” Phukan said.

Another speaker at the venue Debojyoti Bhuyan, a Bahona College teacher, while pointing out to the Jorhat administrative block and the treasury office nearby, said that Millenium park was located opposite to these two places which were seats of corruption. He alleged that teachers had to grease the palms of treasury officials at every step when they had to get their pay bills passed.

Secretary of the Anajori Mahila Sangathan, Dipanjali Sharma, stressed that women should discourage their husbands from indulging in corrupt practices if they come to know of it and mothers should teach their children to be honest.

Advocate Rintu Goswami stated that the book Sanjoy’s Assam: Diaries and writings of Sanjoy Ghose explicitly depict the kind of corruption he was fighting against on the river island of Majuli before Ulfa killed him.
