The death toll in the floods reached 81 with reports of five more people dying — two in Baksa district and one each in Cachar, Barpeta and Biswanath districts of Assam.

Altogether 17 districts and 27.15 lakh remained affected, of whom 1.59 lakh are taking shelter in 929 relief camps.

The overall flood situation improved considerably on Friday with the water level receding in several districts.

According to the Assam Disaster Management Authority report, the water started receding in several districts and the number of relief camps have also gone down considerably.

The threat to several Lower Assam districts from excess water being released by the Kurichu dam in Bhutan also subsided with controlled release of water and let-up in rainfall since Thursday.

As much as 1,200 cumecs of water was released since 6am on Thursday.

The Bongaigaon deputy commissioner, Adil Khan, told The Telegraph, “The situation is absolutely normal now. The water level of all the rivers of Bongaigaon district are below the danger level. The weather is clear today and if there is no rain in the next two days, we will be out of danger. There are now 22 relief camps in the district.”

An official of the District Disaster Management Authority of Barpeta district said: “The situation has improved though a huge number of flood-affected persons are still in the relief camps. Only the Beki is flowing at 45.53 metres against its danger level of 41.3 metres.”

The Brahmaputra continued to flow above the danger level in two districts, Neematighat in Jorhat district and Dhubri, the Jia Bhoroli in Sonitpur district, Puthimari in Kamrup district and Beki in Barpeta.

The millennium batch of Assam Medical College and Hospital has arranged a free health camp at Kochudola high school, Jogighopa of Bongaigaon district on Sunday to treat the flood affected.

A medical team of 25 persons, including child specialist, will see patients from 9am.

A free medical health check-up and medicine distribution camp was organised on Friday by Assam Branch Indian Tea Association, Dibrugarh circle, under the aegis of Dibrugarh police for residents of Thangaon and Itakhoolie villages in Lezai Kolakhowa area which has been severely affected in the recent floods.

The camp was organised on Friday at Itakhoolie Dehingthan English High School with medical officers from Abita gardens Greenwood, Singlijan, Nudwa, Nahortoli and Romai, along with their paramedical teams. Nearly 350 patients benefited from the camp which also included children and the elderly.
