Jorhat, March 15: Assam Agricultural University (AAU) will confer a honorary doctor of science (DSc) degree to serial innovator Uddhab Bharali.

Bharali will be conferred the degree along with S. Ayyappan, director-general of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research, during the university’s convocation scheduled for later this year.

AAU vice-chancellor K.M. Bujarbaruah said Bharali has been doing a commendable job with a series of innovative machines which has helped the agricultural sector. “He truly deserves this prestigious degree,” Bujarbaruah said.

Uddhab Bharali has designed and prototyped an entire range of mechanical innovations since his first innovation in 1987. He has innovated around 85 engineering devices for different purposes.

Of late, he has been working jointly with the Tea Research Association to design a tea-processing machine, which is expected to help small tea growers in a big way.

Last year, the university had conferred the DSc (honoris causa) on Hemendra Prasad Barooah, noted tea planter, and to Bhaskar Barua, an able administrator, for their contributions towards the growth and development of agriculture in the region and the country.

Barooah passed away last year.
