Calcutta: Shillong Lajong Football Club stripped Dempo Sports Club of their pride with a thumping 3-0 victory in the opening round of the I-League, at the Duler Stadium, Mapusa, Goa, on Sunday.

Dempo are in a transition phase under coach Arthur Papas. But no one could have anticipated this fate for them. Lajong’s foreign striker, World Cupper Glen Cornell and Boithang Haokip struck for the visitors in the first session. Cornell completed his brace after the break.

Cornell and Silva scared the rival defenders, manned by the foreign duo of Simon Collosimo and Shinnosuke Honda.

In the seventh minute, Silva and Cornell combined effectively but Cornell’s shot missed the target narrowly.
