2 rookies in Bengal squad

Rana Chowdhury and Arindam Ghosh are the two new faces that have been included in the 18-member Bengal squad — announced on Thursday — for the inaugural Twenty20 (East Zone) Championship to be held here from April 3-8.

The name of the captain hasn’t been declared as CAB wants to keep options open. “If Sourav (Ganguly) plays, he will lead the side otherwise Deep will be in charge,” a senior CAB official said.

School cricket

St Xavier’s Collegiate School and Don Bosco registered wins in their respective matches in the SLOBA Inter-school cricket meet on Thursday. St Xavier’s beat St Lawrence by 7 wickets while Don Bosco overcame Birla High School by an identical margin.

Category B (U-16): Birla High School 164/6 in 25 ovs (Purab Joshi 94; Pranveer Singh 3/30). Don Bosco School 168/3 in 20.3 ovs (Pranveer Singh 50). Don Bosco School won by 7 wkts.

Category B (U-16): St Lawrence High School 117 in 23 ovs (Parikshit Dhall 51, R. Arvind 4/17). St Xavier’s Collegiate School 120/3 in 22.2 ovs (Utsav Manjeer 48). St Xavier’s won by 7 wkts.

Beighton Cup

FCI blanked CC&FC Gremlins by 6-0 in a Beighton Cup hockey tournament tie at the CC&FC on Thursday. Somnath Sarkar (2), Sudhir Minz, Jordan Sarin, Jugal Kishore and Iqbal Singh scored for the winners.

In another tie, Punjab Sports Club trounced Khalsa Blues 3-0. Punjub SC took an early lead as Ravinder Singh and William Messi converted penalty corners in ninth and 17th minutes, respectively. Gurdeep Singh scored a field goal nine minutes from the final hooter to round off the tally.

Chess meet

The Hooghly District Chess Association-organised two-day All Bengal Junior School chess championship will commence at Sarathi, Rishra on Saturday.
